Six-year-old gelding Russian Mint continued his impressive start to life in Far North Queensland when scoring a strong victory at Townsville on 14 April. A son of Russian Revolution, Russian Mint only recently joined the stable of Tommy Button after previously racing in South East Queensland, and the change of scenery has proven an instant success for both trainer and connections.
The win was Russian Mint’s second success from just three starts in North Queensland, much to the delight of his owners, who have quickly been rewarded for their support. Since arriving in the region, the gelding has shown a new lease on life and has adapted beautifully to his new surroundings and racing pattern.
Ridden confidently by Courtney Bellamy, Russian Mint was urged out of the barriers before settling in the perfect position outside the leader throughout the running. Travelling comfortably and always within striking distance, the gelding appeared to have plenty to offer as the field approached the home turn.
Turning for home, Bellamy allowed Russian Mint time to balance up before asking for his finishing effort, and the response was immediate. Lengthening strongly over the final stages, Russian Mint proved too powerful for his opposition, drawing clear to score by a length in an authoritative performance that suggested there may be further success ahead for the in-form gelding.
